Measure once. Choose with confidence.

Before choosing a shelf, cabinet or storage unit, make a short note of the space it needs to fit — and the space you need to use it.

Start with the empty space

Record the available width, depth and height in centimetres. Check the narrowest points rather than relying on the room’s overall dimensions. Skirting boards, a sloping ceiling or an alcove can change what fits.

Allow for everyday use

Think about how you will reach the contents. Doors and drawers need space to open, and a storage box needs enough room to be lifted out. Keep nearby doors, sockets and existing furniture in mind.

Compare the right dimensions

Look for the manufacturer’s assembled dimensions. Packaging dimensions describe the box, which may be different from the finished unit. If a product’s measurements are unclear or incomplete, check with the seller before relying on them.

Check the route into the room

Consider the doorway and any turns on the way in. Check whether the item arrives assembled or needs to be assembled in the room. For flat-pack furniture, allow space for the assembly steps described in the instructions.

Use fit as a starting point

Dimensions can help rule out unsuitable options, but they do not establish build quality, stability or load capacity. Read the product’s instructions and stated requirements as well as its measurements.
